Muscat 20 th
July 2017 : In a crime that has shaken the Omani society to the core, a
mentally-ill man was killed by his own brother on the first day of Eid al Fitr.
The accused killed his brother by driving a car over him in Ma’abela.Giving
details about the shocking incident, 1st Lt Jummah bin Abdullah al Ka’bi from
the Department of Inquiries and Criminal Investigations at Muscat Police
Headquarters said, “After the matter was reported to a local police station, I
visited the accident site. It look like a usual hit-and-run accident with blood
all around. All evidences pointed towards a speeding car running over a
person.”On further investigation, he said, “I found that there were no brake
marks nor were there any car parts except for a small piece that I found at
some distance from the victim’s body. It was a piece of the car’s headlight.
That crucial piece of evidence helped us to determine that it was not a normal
road accident.”He said that the headlight’s piece helped us to know about the
make and model of the vehicle. “Our investigation team found out about the
owner of the vehicle. We were shocked to know that the killer was the brother
of the deceased.”1st Lt Ka’bi said that the accused had bought this car
especially to commit the crime. “He destroyed the car and dumped it in a wadi
with the help of his father who knew about the plan from the very beginning.
Both have been arrested. The brother has confessed to the crime. His father
said that his mentally-ill son was a burden on the family and had no job. He
was also a source of irritation at home.”
Both have been referred to the Public Prosecution to complete the legal
procedures pending trial.
